Introduction

Farmers are moving from rural areas to large cities. This is a very large issue in China because it causes many negative effects in the society.

Farmers leave their homes to find better jobs, live in a more advanced environment, and receive a higher salary. After they used all their money and efforts to get to the city, they can't afford to go back to their old job. Farmers believe that going to the city means that they will earn a lot of money and have a "fairytale-like" life. Yet, in reality, most farmers cannot even find a job in the city, or they are cheated by working for a period of time, but never recieving their salary. Migrant workers can catch disease and never receive medical treatment because they do not own healthcare.

Not only does it affect the migrants, but it affects the city dwellers as well. The farmers are moving out of their farms to go to the city. Without enough farmers, there will be food shortages because of the lack of work being done of farms. Society today is so focused on technology that many overlook the basics of life. Farming has been one of the oldest occupations in history, but now it's a sign of poverty. Also, after not being able to find a job, the migrants have no where to go, but the streets where they must beg for money. It causes an unclean and overpopulated environment in the city. It also gives a negative effect to tourists. Running out of space in the large cities is possible. High rise buildings populate most of Shanghai, but there are still so many people that cannot find a sustainable home.

Farmers move into cities for a number of reasons, most of which are actually caused by society. Farmers do no have healthcare while city dwellers do. They live in a shabby environment while having to do physical labor even through the hottest of summers. The city does hold chances, for a better life, but the chances are slim, and the UME wants the farmers to be aware of that. We, the UME are here to educate people about these affects. Urban migration is definately a major problem, and if we don't get the word out quickly, it's going to have a strong impact on daily lives. People aren't completely aware of the situation yet. Understanding a problem is the first step to solving it. We are making that first step.
